Depending on the location of the plugs, removal and recycling of these plugs may be necessary. In these procedures, the older, large plugs are partially or entirely removed from the scalp and divided into small follicular unit grafts. These “recycled” hair plugs, together with newly harvested hair from the back of the head, eliminate the “plugginess†and offer patients with old-style hair restorations a much more natural hairline.
The advancements of follicular unit extraction have also created more options for the repairing of old hair transplants. FUE is a technique of hair restoration that involves, direct extraction of follicular units from the donor area. Because excision is not linear as in traditional hair transplantation, scarring can be virtually nonexistent, though this can vary from patient to patient based on individual healing tendencies. Those with extremely tight scalps from previous hair transplant procedures can also benefit greatly. Meeting with a hair restoration specialist will help you determine if FUE is right for you.
Besides repairing old-fashion plugs, refinement of the hairline can also improve upon people’s earlier hair restoration results, such as hairlines that were too straight, too high, too low, or angled inappropriately.
